Music is our Business

Dear reader,

In a few days, Reeperbahn Festival International will open its (virtual) doors in Beijing! From 21 – 23 April, our selected 40 European participants can look forward to a top-class program. A note in advance: Participation in the discussion panels on 22 April is open to all interested parties. Simply create an account on the digital Reeperbahn Festival conference platform here.

After Beijing and Nashville (10–12 May), we are also pleased to launch the Call for Applications for the third international spin-off of Reeperbahn Festival. The digital/hybrid Pan-Africa event, in cooperation with Music In Africa Foundation, will take place from 31 May – 3 June and is aiming to connect with music industry markets from Lagos to Joburg, just like its partner event, ACCES, which takes place at alternating locations on the continent. European music-industry professionals are cordially invited to apply by 30 April at the latest to participate as delegates.

Introducing:
The Program For Reeperbahn Festival International Beijing

In cooperation with WISE - The Future Festival & Think Tank and supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, we will provide above all small and medium-sized companies as well as promising new artists direct access to the Chinese music-, tech-, and creative industries.

The event will begin on Wednesday, 21 April at 9:00 am (MESZ) with an official kick-off for our selected 40 European delegates, which will include greetings, an explanation of the program, and a subsequent Q&A with the delegates. The events will continue seamlessly with digital visits to Kanjian and Livenation in Beijing followed in the evening by a hybrid showcase concert with emerging European and Chinese acts beginning at 7:00 pm that can be livestreamed and watched by the public via Facebook.
Performers: Lie Ning, Bohan Phoenix, and Ava Vegas

On 22 April, the Reeperbahn Festival Focus Session Music Market China - Taking The Challenge" will await all interested music industry professionals (register here) starting at 9:00 am. In a series of interesting panels titled "Music Marketing in China," "Touring and Festivals in China," and "Future Trends in Music and Tech," experts will present and discuss the interplay between the European and Chinese music and creative markets, followed by a moderated discussion and a subsequent Q&A.

The last day, 23 April, will be all about making new contacts for our selected participants. In close cooperation with WISE, beginning at 9:00 am, a 1:1 matchmaking session between Chinese decision-makers and each member of the European delegation will be curated and individually tailored to the goals and interests of each participant.

Due to the current pandemic, Reeperbahn Festival International events will be offered primarily in digital/hybrid form on the digital Reeperbahn Festival conference platform, but we promise to continue to offer a wide variety of events.

We are looking forward to an exciting experience with all the delegates!

A study on gender distribution in the music industry

With a comprehensive market research study as part of the Keychange initiative, Reeperbahn Festival is investigating gender distribution in all segments of German music culture and the music industry. The significance of gender equality in the usage of music services from a consumer's point of view will also be examined for the first time. The results will be presented at Reeperbahn Festival in September 2021.

The study will be carried out by the renowned market research institute KANTAR and made possible by the support of the Minister for Culture, Prof. Monika Grütters.

Factors such as gender-specific differences in employment conditions, salary distribution and career opportunities within companies in the music industry will be investigated. In addition, insights will be gained into the influences of gender diversity on consumer purchasing decisions and user behaviour.

A thing we heard

“With equal opportunities for women, we not only achieve fairness and equality, but also new perspectives, opportunities, and a more diverse cultural and media landscape. ”

Prof. Monika Grütters, Minister For Culture, on the study conducted by the Keychange initiative.
