Press Release
02 september 2021

Dear mediapartners, dear colleagues,

Much has happened since our press release in July, in which we announced a cautious return toward normality with regard to the holding of Reeperbahn Festival 2021. With an increased number of international acts on the concert programme, the in-person conference taking place again, and last but not least the full jury for our ANCHOR international music award attending in Hamburg, the 16th Reeperbahn Festival truly reflects the gradual comeback of the global music scene. At the same time, it is becoming clear that cultural events, as well as other types of events, will be accompanied by the circumstances related to the pandemic for some time yet. Therefore, dealing with these factors is still as crucial as ever.

The presently much-discussed so-called “2G” option, in the current regulation issued by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg allowing only people who are either vaccinated against or have recovered from Covid-19 access to an event, thus represents a further step towards resuming regular practice for the cultural sector, with a simultaneously minimised risk of infection. This is the approach we would have liked to take. However, this is not yet feasible for Reeperbahn Festival, with its many different venues, programme formats and visitor groups.

Therefore, following careful consideration, we have come to the decision to hold Reeperbahn Festival this year in line with the so-called 3G restrictions, thus offering all vaccinated, recovered and tested guests the chance to attend.

Reeperbahn Festival 2021 with an international line-up

In three weeks’ time, the 16th Reeperbahn Festival will start, thus becoming the hub of the international music scene again over four days – all live in Hamburg’s St Pauli district.
A wide schedule of 300 concerts at around 35 venues is on offer for all festival visitors, while over half of the 250 artists and acts involved are international names such as RY X (AUS), Daughters of Reykjavík (ISL), Working Men's Club (GBR) or Suzane (FRA).
For music business visitors, around 150 programme items in formats such as sessions, matchmaking and networking with over 300 speakers, including Lyor Cohen (YouTube/Google, Global Head of Music, USA) and Michael Krause (Spotify, General Manager Europe, GER), offer the opportunity for direct exchange and expansion of existing networks.
The ANCHOR 2021 jury consists of Emeli Sandé (GBR), Jacob Banks (GBR), Tayla Parx (USA), Tom Odell (GBR), Tony Visconti (USA) and Yvonne Catterfeld (GER) and will attend the shows of the six nominees Florence Arman (AUT/GBR), PVA (GBR), Yard Act (GBR), OSKA (AUT), May The Muse (DEU) and Lie Ning (DEU).
In the film programme, director Edgar Wright (GBR) will present his film "The Sparks Brothers" (GBR/USA).

Although advancing vaccination campaigns are enabling the gradual resumption of international live-performance events, it is still clear that live music has a long way to go before it returns to pre-pandemic operating conditions.

In the past few days, some Hamburg venues have already been using a 2G option (vaccinated & recovered), which was also looked at for the upcoming Reeperbahn Festival. However, since the overall structure of the festival involves a lot of very different venues in collaboration, staging the festival in 2G format is currently not feasible.

Reeperbahn Festival 2021 will therefore take place as a 3G event, and can be attended by festival and professional visitors with proof that they are vaccinated, recovered or tested against Covid. This rule is backed up by a capacity limit for attendees at the event, which is why there are only a few tickets still available in some categories. Tickets for the conference programme are available from the ticket shop.

As last year, Reeperbahn Festival 2021 will again take place in close coordination with the responsible authorities and the participating venues, for which individual protection concepts will apply in each case.

For all those who cannot attend this year’s festival, there is a streaming platform on our website with an extensive offering.

Specific details of festival arrangements can be found in our FAQ.
